Peppermint is actually a fairly young herb. It is a hybrid of spearmint and wild mint, and no record of this particular hybrid can really be found before the mid–1700s.

Despite not having the history of some other herbs, peppermint has become one of the most popular herbal medicines and flavorings in the world, and it is used in a large variety of ways.

In addition to being used as a flavoring in many candies and other food products, peppermint also has medicinal properties. A cup of peppermint tea may help to relieve digestive upset, and the high levels of menthol present can help to soothe a body afflicted with a cough or common cold.
