Anise is a flowering plant in the family Apiaceae that is native to the eastern Mediterranean region and Southwest Asia. Its flavor resembles that of liquorice, fennel, and tarragon.
Western cuisines have long used anise as a moderately popular herb to flavor some dishes, drinks, and candies for its licorice–like flavor. The most powerful flavor component of the anise is called Anethole and is found in both anise and an unrelated spice called star anise (Illicium verum) that features prominently in South Asian, Southeast Asian, and East Asian dishes.
Although commonly used in delicious dishes and in the flavoring of candies Anise may have properties that relate to helping your health! Anise can be chewed as a digestive aid. Folklore has even said chewing a few seeds may help with the common cough, similar to a lozenge!
